Who makes TEDx Portland
We are a group of PSU student volunteers who have dedicated their time, skills, and passion to follow the TED vision: Spread Ideas.
We feature speakers from Portland State's campus and local communities.
What is TED?
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks that are 18 minutes or less. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages.
TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. TED.com is a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers, and a community of curious souls. It is a space for people to engage with ideas and each other, both online and at TED and TEDx events around the world, all year long.

What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxPortlandStateUniversity, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized. These local events have become a truly international phenomenon, taking place in more than 130 countries, sparking deep discussion and connection across and around the world.
In February 2019, we hosted our “Moving Forward” event at the Native American Student and Community Center near the PSU park blocks. It featured an array of ideas worth spreading from our local community, and in front of a sold-out audience of 100. In December 2019, we hosted our first ever TEDTalk viewing party where we had an intimate gathering at PSU’s Karl Miller Center to watch highlighted TEDTalks from the TEDWomen 2019 Conference that took place earlier that month in Palm Springs, CA. In our second year of organizing, while our vision for a larger in-person event became less promising due to COVID-19, our vision for our value and how we can be change-makers for our community became stronger.
Our mission is to spread ideas. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives, and ultimately, the world. We aim to make great ideas accessible and spark conversation and create connection. Through our independently-organized events, we exemplify our mission by: highlighting and uplifting local ideas worth spreading, creating spaces where curious minds become inspired, building meaningful community relationships and partnerships, and sustaining the momentum for positive, tangible change.
